While the Judges were putting their heads together to decide on the eventual winner, our Principal, Mr. Namgay Wangchuk, was requested to comment on the day’s proceedings. Thanking the organizers and the outstation Judges, he remarked that the program was impressive as were the participants. He reminded the participants though to refrain from the practice of hurting others’ feelings by using abusive terms like ‘handicapped’ or ‘blind’. More acceptable alternatives would be ‘people with disabilities’ or ‘visually impaired’, as per the modern trends. He expressed the view that next time the standard of the contest and competitiveness may be even better than what it was today.
Ms.Palden Wangmo then declared the result of the Debate. 2014, with the team (consisting of Druk and Chung House), supporting the motion, being the winner. Rakesh Bastola was deservingly adjudged the Best Speaker followed by Pema Zangmo against the proposition and Sangay Choden of class IX E speaking for the motion, securing the third position.
The Inter-House English Debate concluded with Nima Zangmo, XB, delivering the Vote-of-Thanks.
I winced when I heard Ms.Palden on the microphone, dedicating the day’s contest to Yours Truly at the end. I made an even greater blunder by pretending to be shocked and surprised in front of others, when I enquired of her why she had to dedicate the program to me. It was her show from the beginning and she deserves to be congratulated whole-heartedly along with all the accolades. I felt very proud of this unassuming colleague of mine. It will be a huge blow for CHSS, if she goes away next year.

As I left the hall, there was not the least bit of doubt in my mind that the future of Bhutan is in very secure hands with all our talented students conscientiously performing their roles to perfection. Mr.TSheten Dorji, our VP, summed it up very accurately when he said: “Given the chance and the right kind of exposure, our students can compete with the best and excel anywhere in the world ……”.
